Clean energy technology pathways from research to commercialization: Policy and practice case studies

Clean energy research and development (R D) leading to commercial technologies is vital economic development, technology competitiveness, reduced environmental impact. Over the past 30 years, such efforts have advanced performance cost by leveraging network effects economies of scale. After demonstrating promise in applied R D, successful clean efficiency are incorporated into an initial product sold private sector. Despite its importance, processes which first commercialization occurs difficult generalize while capturing specific insights from practitioners markets technologies. This paper presents a policy-focused qualitative assessment four diverse technologies: thin film photovoltaics, wind turbine blades, dual-stage refrigeration evaporators, fuel cells for material handling equipment. Each distinct value propositions, markets, regulatory drivers. The case studies indicate three common characteristics new 1) good fit between technology, R&D infrastructure, public-private partnership models; 2) high degree alignment government regulations priorities with market forces; 3) compatibility time scales required R&D, opportunities. These findings may inform investment decision-making, maximize benefits advance transition low-emission future.
